Drive the Buggy out of the canyon and north along the coast, cross the river, and head for Nibelheim seated at the foot of the mountains straight ahead. When you approach the far room, Sephiroth will tell you he's going 'north past Mt. Leave the mansion and take the far path and head north to reach Mt.
Head left across the rope bridge and you'll reach an area with five chutes. Take the chute second from the right and you'll drop to a lower ledge.
Jump down and enter the cave below, head for the opposite end, and cut back to reach the farthest cave on the left. Head back to the far end of the cave and proceed toward the Nibel Reactor. The events here directly the script later on, and in the Whirlwind Maze , when Sephiroth creates an illusion of a burning Nibelheim, and makes Cloud question what he did while in-town.
Additionally, when on the piano , selecting "Yeah, I jammed on it" and correctly playing the tune gives the player a chance to pick up an Elemental Materia upon returning later.
Tifa's house has more interactions during "Unnatural Hometown", when the player goes there with the party.
The back room on the first floor a man in a black cape will relinquish a Turbo Ether. If the piano is played on three times either selecting "I forgot" or "I remember" and then to quit , the player can discover 1 gil. When Tifa is the party leader in disc 2, playing the piano gives the player an Elemental Materia , but only if the player made Cloud jam on the piano during "The Tragedy of Five Years Ago" flashback. Doing this again when Cloud returns as party leader with Tifa in the party will get her Limit Break manual, Final Heaven.
During "The Tragedy of Five Years Ago", if the player visits Cloud's House, they can choose to watch clips of the events showing Cloud's conversations with his mother.
During the visit with Cloud and the party, a lady lives in Cloud's house who refutes Cloud grew up there. The mansion is found on the town outskirts, and in the present day is more of an "optional dungeon" field than a town field, as there are no NPCs, random encounters occur, and the player can solve puzzles for various good rewards. If the player visits the basement the first time the story takes the party to Nibelheim, they get a short cutscene and score a Destruct Materia.
There is a black caped man outside the mansion who relinquishes a Mind Source unless the player already got the Luck Source from the inn. The player controls a young Cloud and can interact with the residents, where some interactions will trigger dialogue from the present day party as they question Cloud's story of the events.
In "Unnatural Hometown", the visit is brief, as the objective is not really within Nibelheim itself. While visiting the town, the player can interact with some of the townspeople who will deny any events of the Nibelheim Incident and that Cloud and Tifa grew up there, though there is otherwise little to discover until later after the events in " Searching for the You of That Day ". If the player makes Cloud say "Yeah, I jammed on it", followed by "I forgot", a tutorial is shown.
Simply selecting the "jam option" during the flashback and hitting any of the keys is sufficient. If the player leave the room down the stairs and back, the player can get 1 gil from the piano again by doing the same. The player can do this unlimited times. To attain the Materia, Tifa must check the piano. After Cloud rejoins the party as party-leader, with Tifa in the party, and regardless of whether the player played the piano previously, playing the "Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII" tune will reveal a letter to Tifa from Zangan, containing her ultimate Limit Break, Final Heaven.
This is the only time when the player needs to play the tune to obtain something from the piano. Things the player chooses to do in the flashback during "The Tragedy of Five Years Ago" is referenced later in the game in the Whirlwind Maze when Cloud recalls his memories.
He starts by saying Five years ago, I came back to Nibelheim, to inspect the reactor. I was sixteen. The town hadn't changed at all. What did I do? During the second visit on Disc 1 you can take the opportunity to venture in and explore the Shinra Mansion. This is where you complete the side quest to obtain the optional secret character: Vincent Valentine.

His mother was his only family, as his father had died while he was young. He considered the other children childish and himself superior. Tifa's mother died and she believed she could find her again by climbing Mt.
She injured herself during the trek and fell into a coma and Cloud, who had followed her, was blamed for the incident and forbidden from getting close to Tifa by her father. Cloud departed and Tifa began training with Zangan , a martial arts expert, and worked as a guide on Mt.
Nibel for tourists and visitors. Sephiroth and Zack and their guards head to Nibelheim to investigate a broken section of the Nibelheim Reactor. Cloud is too ashamed to show his failure to his hometown, and keeps his helmet on when they meet with Tifa, their guide.
When a picture is taken of the party before heading out, Cloud stays out of it. As the group makes its way to the reactor a bridge collapses and a Shinra infantryman goes missing. Upon arriving at the reactor Sephiroth and Zack fix a broken valve, but find the hideous by-products of Hojo's experiments: makonoids within pods who once were humans.
The back of the reactor has a sealed door, inscribed with the name Sephiroth had come to associate with the mother he had never met: Jenova. Sephiroth wonders if he is no different from the monsters, and his former friend, Genesis Rhapsodos , who had earlier deserted Shinra, appears to confirm his suspicions. Wanting to learn more, Sephiroth locks himself away in the Shinra Mansion basement and for several sleepless days, reads about the Jenova Project.
The answers drive him insane. Believing himself to be the heir to the Cetra legacy, due to a misconception that Jenova was an Ancient, Sephiroth slaughters most of the townsfolk and burns the town to the ground.
Zack, Tifa, Zangan, and Cloud try to help, but their efforts are in vain. Cloud's mother and Tifa's father are killed. Sephiroth climbs Mt. Nibel to find his mother, Jenova, inside the reactor. He breaks into the sealed room and speaks with an angelic effigy that masks Jenova from view about finding the Promised Land.
He tears the effigy off the machine, revealing an alien monster in a tank whom he refers to as "mother". Tifa and Zack confront Sephiroth in the reactor. Tifa picks up the discarded Masamune and rushes at Sephiroth, but is disarmed and incapacitated.
Zack fights Sephiroth but is defeated and cast aside. Cloud leaves to check on Tifa and Zack, but Sephiroth staggers out of Jenova's chamber, holding her severed head. Cloud attacks Sephiroth again, but is disarmed and impaled through the chest. Using the sword as a lever Cloud picks up Sephiroth, and throws him into the Lifestream below the reactor. In Episodes 12 and 13, the player, along with the Turk leader, Verdot , help Hojo start his new experiment and hide the incidence.
They, and the survivors of Sephiroth's rampage, are injected with Jenova cells and kept in tanks of Mako. Zack escapes with the help of his old mentor, Angeal Hewley , who aids him from the lifestream. Zack frees Cloud, who is suffering from mako poisoning, and the two escape Nibelheim. The town is rebuilt and repopulated with actors hired by Shinra to ensure word of the incident never gets out.
Shinra seals up Sephiroth's records and he is presumed dead. Zangan had brought Tifa to Midgar where she recovers and sets out to get revenge on Shinra, joining the resistance group Avalanche and running its headquarters, the 7th Heaven bar in the Sector 7 Slums.
Five years later, Cloud and Tifa have reunited and search for the resurfaced Sephiroth across the Planet. Their search leads them to their hometown of Nibelheim, now rebuilt and infested with Sephiroth Clones who chant on about Sephiroth and Reunion. Not one of the town's inhabitants recognizes either of them, since they are fakes put in place by Shinra.
In Tifa's old house Cloud finds a letter detailing what has happened in Nibelheim since they have been gone. In the Shinra Mansion basement they find Vincent Valentine locked in a coffin, who can be coaxed to join the party. They encounter Jenova in Sephiroth's disguise who tells Cloud to follow across the mountains. In the Remake, Nibelheim is mentioned first by Sephiroth, who mocks Cloud that his hometown burned so bright when he set Nibelheim ablaze, and then during Cloud and Tifa's conversations.
Nibelheim is located to the west on Gaia's Western continent, specifically in the Nibel Area. The town is located at the base of Mt. Nibel, and runs through the town from the entrance to lead up to the mountain. The Nibel Reactor located within Mt. Nibel presumably powers the town. Nibelheim comprises several buildings which are an architectural mix between classical style houses, with a few technological details added on. In the center of the town is a well tower, around which the houses circle it.
Past this plaza is the Shinra Manor, a grander building surrounded by a fence. Nibelheim is light on vegetation, with a few flowers close by the buildings and trees inside the manor's fence, but is built on otherwise barren ground beneath the mountain.
Beneath the town is a large man-made sewer-system that stretches from the reactor upon Mt. Nibel to the town beneath Shinra Manor. Nibelheim is first visited during "The Tragedy of Five Years Ago" purely in the flashback scene, in which Cloud describes his version of events that took place in the Nibelheim Incident.
Throughout this, the player can interact with the town, and when attempting to enter Cloud or Tifa's house, he will be asked by other party members who seek clarity about his story. Later, the party return to Nibelheim in "Unnatural Hometown", where they find the rebuilt town.
At this point, the objective is simply to pass through the town, though entering Shinra Mansion will allow them to recruit Vincent and fight Lost Number.
