That game was originally scheduled to take place on the opening weekend of the season but was postponed because of City's progress in last season's Champions League. One of the matches they have in hand - the game at home to Newcastle, which was postponed from 4 December after the Magpies' own coronavirus outbreak - has been rescheduled for Saturday, 23 January. Villa's Covid outbreak meant that no first-team players were available for the FA Cup third-round tie against Liverpool last Friday.

The West Midlands club had to field a starting XI composed of seven under players and four from the unders, and lost at Villa Park. Speaking about footballers celebrating, Julian Knight, chair of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee said: "Some of the scenes we have seen have been brainless and give out an awful message.

Villa were able to play their FA Cup third-round fixture against Liverpool last weekend, but were forced to field a team made up of academy and U23 players.

Following the postponement of their game against Everton, Villa released a statement reading: "The club would like to express its immense gratitude to the medical experts who have helped us to get a significant Covid outbreak under control, as well as the Premier League board and our fellow clubs for their understanding during this period.

A Premier League statement added: "The Premier League, in consultation with its clubs, has enhanced its COVID protocols, in addition to reimplementing a twice-weekly testing programme as the health of players and staff remains the priority.

Newcastle's postponed match at Villa - which was due to be played in December but was called off after the Magpies experienced their own Covid outbreak - has been rescheduled for Saturday, 23 January at 8pm, live on Sky Sports.
